    COVID-19 Orientation and Training program for Police Personnel held on 02-05-2020 at AV Hall, SDUMC, Kolar

    As the Corona (COVID-19) Pandemic has gripped the world, an orientation and training program for Police Personnel was held on 02-05-2020 at AV Hall, II Floor, Department of Community Medicine, SDUMC, SDUAHER, Kolar.  Superintendent of Police Kolar Mr.Karthik Reddy (IPS), K.G.F Superintendent of Police Ms. Mohammed Sujitha (IPS), Additional SP of Kolar Ms.Jhanavi, Chief Executive Officer Mr. Darshan. H.V (IAS), ADC (Aide –De-Camp) officer of Kolar took part in the programme along with 65 other police personnel. Public health care professionals also took part in the programme. Dr.Vijayakumar, District Health & Family Welfare Officer, Dr. Jagadish (RNTCP and NACO officer), Dr.Chandan (RCHO) of Kolar were few of them to name. All the delegates were welcomed by Dr.Azeem Mohiyuddin, Medical Superintendent, R.L.Jalappa Hospital and Research Center, Kolar. Measures were taken to prevent overcrowding at registration counters and inside the AV hall. All participants had to sanitize hand with alcohol based hand rub and were provided with one three-layer mask.

    The first session was by Dr.Azeem Mohiyuddin, Medical Superintendent, R.L.Jalappa Hospital and Research Center who spoke on Introduction to Corona virus. He spoke on magnitude of the problem worldwide, India and Kolar, common symptoms of COVID-19 infection, Modes of transmission, Complications of COVID-19 infections, few definitions of Cases, Primary Contact , Secondary contact , Containment Zone, Buffer Zone, Quarantine and Isolation. Next session was by Dr.Anitha, Assistant Professor, Department of Microbiology, SDUMC, SDUAHER, Kolar who spoke on Characteristics and Lab Diagnosis of COVID-19.She stressed on Lab diagnosis of COVID-19 on various sectors like specimen collection and transport, Diagnostic test (RT-PCR) and non-confirmatory serological tests. This session was followed by Corona Virus-Modes of Transmission and Prevention of Spread by Dr.Naresh, Associate Professor, Department of Community Medicine, SDUMC, SDUAHER, Kolar who spoke on Infection Prevention and control, general advice for restraining from COVID-19 infection and elements of standard precautions. The fourth session was Clinical Features and complications of COVID-19 infection by Dr.Raveesha, Professor and HoD, Department of General Medicine, SDUMC, SDUAHER, Kolar. He spoke on Incubation period, spectrum of illness, vulnerable population, definitions of uncomplicated illness, Mild Pneumonia, Severe Pneumonia, ARDS and sepsis. He also introduced on Revised COVID -19 testing strategy in India. This was followed by tea break. Next session was Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): Donning and Doffing by Dr.Azeem Mohiyuddin, Medical Superintendent, R.L.Jalappa Hospital and Research Center. A small video was played initially and followed by live demonstration of Donning and Doffing. The sixth session was by Dr.Pradeep.T.S, Assistant Professor, Department of Community Medicine, SDUMC, SDUAHER, Kolar on Precautions to be taken when transporting a suspect case. He spoke on importance of wearing a mask, washing hands, cough etiquette, social distancing, triage process, disinfection of surroundings. He mentioned if no masks available then simple hand kerchief will do and personal protective equipment’s is not necessary. At this time Kolar Superintendent of police Mr.Karthik Reddy added that they have received guidelines from Govt of Karnataka that police personnel need PPE while interviewing a suspect, working in designated red zones of COVID-19, containment and sealed off areas due to COVID-19 outbreak. The final session was Handling COVID-19 Positive / Suspect Dead bodies by Dr. Abhinandana R, Assistant Professor, Department of Forensic Medicine, SDUMC, SDUAHER, Kolar. He spoke on how to prepare himself, preparing dead bodies, Disposing dead bodies, Environment Cleansing and disinfection based on ICMR guidelines. He mentioned a special note on “End of Life kit”. This was followed by demonstration of all steps.

    This session was followed by Questions and Answers (Q&A) section by Police Personnel effectively answered by the speakers. Kolar Superintendent of police Mr.Karthik Reddy thanked SDUAHER for organizing the program and also gave few insights & his experience since Corona outbreak followed by CEO Mr.Darshan who whole heartedly applauded the institution efforts and devoted work of Dr. Azeem Mohiyuddin. Vote of thanks was delivered by Dr.Pradeep.T.S, Assistant Professor, Department of Community Medicine, SDUMC, SDUAHER, Kolar.
